Your dentist
needs to know about the cause of broken tooth. If the breakage is
due to decay then the nerve is in danger. The treatment of the broken
tooth depends upon the severity of the case. In minor breakage
or in case the breakage has affected the outer part or the enamel
of the tooth then the dentist can repair the damage by filling it.
Incase the breakage is of the front tooth or front part of the mouth
then the dentist uses a composite (tooth-colored) filling.
A serious breakage will involve the enamel as well as the inner layer
of the tooth. In some cases only filling is adequate but mostly it
requires capping or a crown. Capping
or crowning is like a cap or crown put on the tooth after filling
so that the filling does not come out. The most serious kind of breaks
involves damage in nerve. In this case your dentist requires giving
you root canal in which the doctor removed the damaged nerves and
blood vessels.
When you get a breakage, you can take some measures as first aid.
The most important is to see the dentist
as early as possible. It is suggested to save the pieces of the tooth
and show them to your dentist as your dentist may be able to cement
the tooth back together as a temporary measure. Applying a cold compress
to the cheek or lips over the broken tooth will help in relieving
the pain and swelling. If you can’t visit your dentist at that
moment then, it is suggested to cover the broken surface of the mouth
with temporary dental cement, available with the chemist.
It is suggested to pick up the broken tooth even in case you have
got your tooth fully knocked. Hold your tooth from the non root area
and rinse it in lukewarm water. Keep the roots cells wet and free
from injury. It is important to keep the tooth moist. For this you
can keep you tooth in a cup of milk or salt water or even in your
mouth till you reach your dentist. Do not attempt to reinsert the
tooth into its socket. You may make an injury and add to your problem.
The important step that should be undertaken is to go to the dentist
as soon as possible. |
